Secretary Sebelius meets with German Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan

February 18, 2010 - U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius with German Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan.

February 18, 2010 - Secretary Sebelius discussed research cooperation between the United States and Germany with Minister Schavan, who was in Washington for the signing of the U.S.-Germany Science and Technology Agreement.  Minister Schavan was accompanied by representatives of the German research community, including the director of the Helmholtz Foundation and the German Research Foundation.

 

The Secretary highlighted bilateral cooperation in cancer research – including a new fellowship agreed between the National Cancer Institute and the German Cancer Research Institute – and in global health.  She welcomed Germany’s support for the G-8 health innovation and capacity building initiative for Sub Saharan Africa.  In addition, the discussion addressed research priorities related to clinical trials and the role of prevention in containing health care costs.
