HHS Renews Memorandum of Understanding on Health and Medical Science with the Republic of Korea

July 14, 2009 - Secretary Sebelius and Jae-Hee Jeon, Minister for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs of the Republic of Korea met on July 14, 2009 to renew the Memorandum of Understanding on Health and Medical Science between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

 

This MOU supports the United States’ deep and broad engagement with the Republic of Korea in science, biomedical research and public health, including developing joint research, training and collaboration activities.  Areas of cooperation identified in the MOU are:

  • Vaccine preventable and other infectious diseases;
  • Tuberculosis, especially multi-drug and extensively drug resistant strains;
  • Pandemic influenza;
  • Chronic diseases;
  • Epidemic investigation and surveillance;
  • Public health emergencies;
  • Gender and global health;
  • Environmental and occupational health; and
  • Public Health Law and quarantine practices.

 

After signing the MOU, the Secretary and the Minister discussed H1N1 vaccine production and options for vaccination programs, joint research on multiple-drug resistant tuberculosis and health care reform in the United States.
