Health Consequences of the Earthquake in Haiti
The United States stands with Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. We offer our condolences and our support to Haiti's suffering people and to the United Nations family on the loss of many dedicated personnel. We are grateful to all the Haitians who, in the midst of this tragedy, have joined the rescue and relief efforts. We are also thankful for the work of Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and WHO staff in the response. We salute Dr.Mitra Roses and her team at PAHO for their tireless efforts to undertake Health-Sector Assessments and restore basic health services. We look forward to enhancing our collaboration with them.
As part of immediate assistance efforts, President Obama has announced the U.S. commitment of 100 million dollars for the relief, humanitarian, and logistical efforts, including the immediate need for disaster assistance response teams, urban search and rescue personnel, and disaster medical assistance teams. The United States appreciates the generosity of the many member states and the non-governmental organizations that are providing support and assistance of all kinds.
Close coordination with the Haitian government, the United Nations and donors is critical to the success of the rescue and Relief operation. The United States will support reconstruction and a sustainable recovery for the people and nation of Haiti. Thank You.
